More Women Travelling Solo

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Recent surveys have shown that the recession is encouraging more women to go travelling solo than ever before.

The travel survey, carried out by HostelBookers.com, revealed that an overwhelming majority of women consider themselves ’solo travellers’ - 74% of participants. 67% of those who responded, said that they regularly (once or twice a year) travel alone.

The budget accommodation specialist also revealed that hostels are the favourite option for accommodation - 76% said they would stay in hostels most or some of the time on their trip, with 60% happy to consider mixed dorms.

During difficult financial times, travel is an increasingly appealing option, especially when budget accomodation allows for travel to far-flung destinations at low cost prices. For more information on accomodation to suit a range of budgets, visit, HostelBookers.com, or HostelWorld.com.

Who are the most liked solo travelers?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

We all know that Australians may be among the loudest travellers, but overall they are polite, don’t whinge, and are well behaved, a new survey has found, and were among the favoured solo travelers.

The global Best Tourist Survey, Expedia found hoteliers around the world rank British and Japanese as the best tourists to have.

The worst tourists are those from the most popular tourist destination in the World, France. The French have a reputation for being rude, arrogant and impatient.

Hostels as an alternative to hotels

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Youth hostels were once the reserve of tour groups and intrepid individuals. The image of a youth hostel, one where you had to be in by the 10pm curfew in prison like surroundings is a thing of a past!

Virtually every town and city now has a youth or backpacker hostel of sorts and they are welcoming more individuals, couples and groups of all ages and backgrounds. The hostel is definetly a viable alternative to the hotel and many offer private rooms which make them an ideal alternative.

Another advantage of youth hostels is the fun element. Fun is something money can’t always buy. The one ingredient that hostels have over hotels is the ‘fun’ element. You can meet people much easier than in a hotel but you can also have your privacy.

Hostelbookers offers the ability to book online Youth hostels worldwide at very competitive rates. Hostelbookers prides itself on being the only independent hostel booking site that has no booing fees!

So we at Solo travel recommend staying in hostels over hotels and hostelbookers.com as a no fee booking agent.

The soaring cost of air travel for solo travelers

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

Air travel is as popular as ever now and is set to become more expensive. This should be raising alarm bells for any solo traveler. So what is behind this sudden increase in air fares?

The number one reason is fuel costs and the rising cost of oil prices. This cost is passed on from the airline directly to the traveler whether it be in the form of a surcharge or simply raising ticket prices.

The thing with solo travelers and travelers in general is that if you are going to go traveling around South America or Southeast Asia, you going to whatever. Even if the price of the ticket goes up by $100.

The airlines are wise to this and will keep pushing up prices accordingly. Supply and demand has a big impact as well.

Some travel experts predict that on some popular routes prices could double over the next year. Good news for the airline but not so great for the solo traveler!

Keeping an eye on the destination travel advice

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

Even when you are traveling already you should always be aware of the various travel advisories from various Governments.

As solo travelers you might be more at risk in certain countries so always refer to the advisories once in a while while you are on the road.

World Nomads have a useful travel advice page which lists all the at risk countries.

Happy solo travels and be safe!
