USA for Solo Travelers & Backpackers

As a Solo Destination:

America is a great destination for solo travellers. Even the most obscure American backwaters can be reached safely using the extensive Greyhound bus network. America is a place of remarkable variation, both in terms of the land and its inhabitants. As such, the solo traveller can never tire from the wonderful attractions it has to offer.

For the most part, travelling alone across the land of plenty is considered safe and is certainly not uncommon. But it is important to be aware of potential hazards and crime risks, particularly in downtown city areas. Remember to exercise caution and common sense when in urban regions.

Accommodation for solo travellers:

Choosing hostels that are part of the IYHA will ensure that solo travellers stay in comfortable and well-serviced accommodation.

Without a doubt, youth hostels are the best option for solo travellers in the U.S. Their down-to-earth, laid back atmosphere, coupled with the abundance of like-minded explorers will ensure that you have plenty of opportunities to meet new people.

Hostels can be found in most of the major cities and at a large number of coastal resorts, national parks and other areas of natural beauty.

Budget for solo travellers:

To keep overspending to a minimum, travellers can purchase a 1-month Greyhound pass, which offers unlimited travel across America. Cooking at least one meal at the hostel/ taking a packed lunch can help save a few extra cents.

Alternatively fill up on the many restaurants that offer cheap all-you-can-eat buffets. Purchasing an ISIC student card will secure you discounts at a variety of tourist attractions. Do something really American and attend a talk show such as Ricki Lake, for free!

Not only are hostels a great place to meet people, they¹re also easy on the wallet. A night¹s rest in one of the bigger cities will usually set you back somewhere in the region of $30-40. In more rural locations, hostels can be as cheap as $15 a night!

Many hostels also offer special deals and discounts on local events and attractions. Be sure not to miss these.

Trips and activities for solos:

Purple Turtle offer cheap tours of America, including most meals and either hostel or camping accommodation.

A great way to meet people is buy taking part in BUNAC's summer jobs in America programme open to all HND/Degree students (including the summer before and after your course) or the Camp America programme, which is also open to non-students.

Both programmes have visas that allow a time for travelling after the job.

The best thing about travelling the States by yourself is the freedom; not having to wait around on other people or go places that don¹t really interest you. You¹re the boss! When in the cities, set aside a day just to walk around aimlessly, exploring the districts and neighbourhoods, taking in the sights, sounds and smells.

There¹s no better to way to experience a city than on foot. A great way to see the country is through Trek America, who organise guided tours in small groups. This once again is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow travellers.
